Graz, I was just thinking about how cool it would be to have a Parsons Reunion in Yokosuka. The next best thing is to do it in San Diego where the Midway is now a museum at the foot of Broadway. Great website that brings back many memories. - Irv Trinkle. -

Nice Site Graz. I spent almost two years in Yokosuka, 1958-1959, at METU-7. METU-7 was under Commander Task Force 73.1.5 Some of the people there at the time: LT J.G. English, ETC Sammy Walker, ET1 Coogle, ET1 Bradford, ET2 Foran. Civilians were Philco Tech Reps, Fred Bybee, Neil Humphries and Bobby Rhodes. I was and ETR3 and was a gopher to the Philco Reps. MOTU-7 was in the same big steel Bldg at SRF, but I don't remember the Bldg Number. The local yard birds built a giant oven inside the bldg to bake a giant rotor from a submarine there at the time (1959). DSCS Ray W. Stein USN Ret. raywstein@yahoo.com

Jim, What a great home page you have. I can see you have put a lot of time and work into it. It sure has brought back a lot of fond memories of Yokosuka. I was in Yoko from Jul 74 to Nov 81 on the Gurke, Francis Hammond, White Plains and at SRF. Also at MOTU-13 from Dec 85-Apr 90. Thanks for a great stroll down memory lane. I hope to go back to Yoko sometime for a visit. Thanks again for the great web site.
Robert Whapeles, CWO3, USN(Ret)
Jim, Your site was brought to my attention by Steve Cleland. We served together on the USS White Plain, and SRF Yoko. I also did a stunt on the USS Towers. Back then I was an ETCS(SW). Your site brought back many memories. I saw Jack Thomas in your pictures. He was my first Master Chief that took me under his wing. It is good to see he is still kicking. Hope you are doing well there. If there is anyone who would like to contact me feel free to email me. Fair Winds and Following Seas to All.

Hi Graz, Sorry I missed ya, you weren't too far from me. However; Tommy and Kayoko made it and spent Wednesday and Thursday nite with me and Setsuko. We had a great time, didn't do anything but shoot the shit in the garage while our brides caught up with all the Yoko happenings. Enjoyed it immensely. They left for Bama Friday morning and then on to Pensacola for Thanksgiving. What a life. NE?

Great site, Jim - I swear I know most of the guys pictured in it! I was at SRF Yoko 71-75 as an ET1, first in the crypto vault & then in A-46 as a Ship Sup. Knew all the MOTU 7 people. I was in ELLIOT 75-81 as ET1 & ETC, and was the last Plankowner to transfer off, July '81. Danielson, Rodenkirch & I were running mates. Again, good site - thanks.

Nice site. I really enjoyed looking at the then and now pictures. It's amazing how things can change. That place looked completely different in the 60s. Now it just looks like any city. Thieves Ally looked like a place you wouldn't want to mess around. Now it's a city street.. It looks like it's gone a little more legit also. I bet you can still get anything you want from those massage places ;)

Retired E8 with two tours in Yokosuka: 1955-57, and 1970-74. You have a wonderful site, and it's easy to see that you've put a lot of work into it. My family and I are having a great time exploring and reminiscing. Our son, Lance was born at Yokosuka NavHosp in 1956, worked at Club Alliance in the 70s, and retired from the Navy in 1995. A terrific site!!! Lucked out and found this site in a browser search for maps of Yokosuka and Sasebo Japan... LOL Jim.... I noted a picture made in "Shooter's Bar" in Sasebo and noticed a long ago familiar face... from 1967. If you can verify this for me, I believe that the lady pictured in the shot named Sachi is one and the same as "Sachiko".... an "old flame" of many years past in Sasebo! If you have any connections to the people listed in the photos from Shooters.... please email me! Great Site... keep up the good work! Jim Baird

Finally, After being in the Navy and working for the navy I am retired. Grass grows and can be detected once you get the hang of it. Yokosuka has been my second home since my first trip there on the USS Coontz (DLG 9) in December 1962. I will always come back health permitting.

I was on the OK City from 1970-1972 and 1976-1979. I now live in Vancouver, WA and the weather is the same, but the people are very different. I miss Yokosuka and the honch, but I am probably too old for that now. Hope all is well.

What a fantastic website! I'm in awe of the Yokosuka Then and Now! I was there in 1956, 57 & 58, so the photos mean a lot to me. And I especially enjoyed reading the article from Our Navy on "Yokosuka City of Sin." I came across a reference to the article a while back but was unable to locate it. So thank you for making it available. I served aboard the USS Spangler DE-696 and the USS Prairie AD-15. I would love to get the web pages for both ship's added to your Ships Homeported in Yokosuka links page. For some reason I'm unable to get your email links to work. Please contact me!

Caught your web site link from the USS Hancock CVA-19 web page. I don't know the last time I laughed this much as when viewing your Thematic Junk section. This is a very entertaining site and I congratulate you on a job well done. I noticed some guest book entries referring to the USS Oklahoma City. I believe she was our flag ship on Yankee Station, China Sea in 1972. We kicked some big time ass during that campaign. I also believe the Oklahoma City was hit by cannon fire in the bridge from two MIGS on their way out to get us on the Hancock. I believe the destroyer Sterrett(?) got off two surface to air missiles and got them both. Not sure though. I was huddled down in my engine room during that GQ. Maybe someone could enlighten me as to the actual chain of events? Good talking to you.

I must admit your website brought a lot of great memories while serving duty in the Navy with COMSEVENTHFLT embarked on USS blue Ridge LCC 19 Yokosuka Japan. I have fond memories of "Club Alliance" and other memories as well of Japan. Gosh I would give anything to go back in time. Although I'm not of the "Old School" Navy but I was there from 1987-1991 and than served in San Diego, HS-8, COMDESRON 7 and HSL-41. Thank you so much for you sharing your experiences and bringing wonderful memories back to life. Sincerely, Jim (Orange, California)

Hi Jim, I accidentally stumbled across your great website. It looks great, and, brings back memories when I was there at CFAY back in 87. I seen you a few times through Herb Maier BMCS SW when I was there. Take care Jerry

Served in MOTU-7 from Mid 1963 to Mid 1966. Remember Jack Bailey. He taught me how to shoot skeet. We formed a skeet club and shot all over the western Pacific. Lived on base above what used to be the Pistol Range. Some names I didn't see: Jerry Barden, RCA Rep., Skip Lanter, ETCM, Jack Beauchamp, ET1, ET1 named Ski, The gunners were in another bldg near the CPO Club. I will be in Yokosuka for a couple of days about June 18,19 or 20. Plan to take a lot of pictures, I sure didn't the first time around.

Great Web Site! I found it while searching for NAVCOMSTA Yokosuka as I served there in 1967/1968. Half of my Radioman Class "A" class were assigned there. Many great memories and always hoped to return for a visit. Still haven't ruled it out but the years are flying by.

ETCM(SS) retired Jim Kinsey passed your website to me. We were talking over a few beers after a meeting in Corona CA and found out we know a lot of the same people. I was stationed with Tom Mills at CRF Subic when he was an E6, was there when he made chief and when he was commissioned. My wife Delly and his wife Yoko were good friends. Both Felix Ballard and I worked for Dyncorp. I was in the PI last May and meant to look him up, but got trapped in Subic. I also knew a lot of the MOTU 13 people from 77 through 80. Plan on moving to PI for my real retirement. Keep up the great work and say hi to Tom and Yoko for me. Bill

One quick addition to my last comment. I am the ETCM(SS) retired, not Jim Kinsey. Sorry for any confusion, but nothing a San Miguel will not fix. Bill

Hi Chief! Bob Whapeles and I work together, and he shared your site with me. I did one tour in the Navy, (YN2), and I remember it and my shipmates fondly. My wife says I should have stayed in and done at least 20. Your site is a credit to all who have served our country in peace and war. I was overwhelmed reviewing it! Thank you for your service! Gene

Enjoyed the trip down memory lane. I was stationed at the Naval Hospital Yokosuka in 1956, 1957. To say it was an enjoyable experience would be an understatement. I enjoyed every moment of my time in Yokosuka. Later was on a ship in and out of Yokohama (1957-1959. Liberty was about the same, much later (1969-1972) was in and out of Sasebo. Lots of cultural changes by then. John

Anyone out there have any idea where /or/ if copies of "Baby-San" paperback series may be located? Like most other things we all enjoyed in the 50/60's, we failed to keep them.

Speaking of old books (previous email) how about the old Burns Bannion books, Kill me in Yokosuka, Kill me in Shimbashi, etc.?

I have been a lurker for awhile and wanted to tell you how much I enjoy your website and think you have done a great job! The reason I come here is to see my grandfather, Jack Bove, when I am missing him (the photos are great!!). I appreciate all you have posted about him and enjoy the other areas of this site. If anyone would care to email anything regarding Jack or my father, Andrew (Andy) Schneller, U.S.S. Independence; I would love to put your comments, etc. in my scrapbook. All the best from Brookville, Indiana, USA!! :)

I enjoyed the Windjammer/CPO club pix, managed to remember the 60's menu. At 1300 every table in the stag bar was littered with cheese sandwiches.

Can't begin to tell you how absolutely exciting it was to discover your site. You brought me back 44 years--and I felt young and adventurous again. My history in Yokosuka is quite extensive. but what I find absolutely mind boggling that you were able to find these photos and compare them to current look. I never had the presence of mind to take a photo of anything. I kicked myself a many a day for not doing so. Now I can stop. You have provided relief with these Honcho pictures and those of Sasebo. One photo you posted was up in The Hole as it was called by the Air Force in the 50s, and where this Crown Bar is located was once a tunnel all the way up to Tachikawa that the Japanese used for transporting supplies. The photo next to it is the same updated. I clearly remember that mountain that the Crown Bar is built into. I rolled down it in the winter of 1962. I truly appreciate that photo of the old EM Club. I have a special connection with it. In 1971 I put on a big stage at the Theater there. One of the kids in my stage show was a soon to be "Luke Skywalker." One thing I'm not familiar with and that is Sub Alley. I don't remember the Honcho being called Sub Alley??? Anyway, thanks a million for putting up this site. I owe you a beer when I get back.

Graz: I was stationed at Yokosuka 1969-1971 and took quite a few color and B&W photos of the base, Honcho, and surrounding area. If you are interested, I can scan them and send them to you on a disk. Email me with your mailing address.

Jim, I work with Gary Beckwith at FISC Yokosuka and he turned me on to your site. It's very nice. I have to admit however, a lot of emotion was drug up seeing the picture of Ed and Judy Krueger. They were both friends and Ed kept myself and many of my shipmates (all who are still in Japan) very wide-eyed with his stories of Yokosuka in the 70s. Although saddened, I'm also happy to see his picture and to pass along this message. Thank you for this site and for including a great sea-daddy like Ed. Very Respectfully, Tim Shannon

I was a Hospital Corpsman at the Naval Hospital in Yokosuka from 1967 through 1969. It was the time of my life. Your photos of Yokosuka back then brought back some terrific memories. Thanks for your efforts.

BZ on your site. I found it while surfing for old photos; what a treasure trove it is! I was stationed in Yokosuka from 81-86 and did my twilight tour from 91-95. We lived in Nagai-cho by the beach (and a block down the road from Gary Beckwith) from 81-86 and in Zushi (Ikego before Navy housing got there) on my last tour. It's funny how life comes full circle. My daughter and son-in-law (USS McCain) are living on the economy in Zushi in the same neighborhood where we lived from 91-95. We're planning a big trip back for Christmas in 2007 and I look forward to seeing all the stuff that's not there any longer. I still have dreams of being an ex-pat!
